How to Repair Bad Credit

Many people still don't know that it's even possible to repair bad credit. In fact, there is still much information (misinformation, actually) out there that says that if you have bad credit, you simple have to wait until 7 to 10 years until it falls off your credit report.

No matter how bad your credit scores are there will always be something you can work on to improve them. Everyone's situation is different, but the first thing you usually want to do is get a copy of your credit reports to know what is being reported about you.

Removing Negative Accounts

If you find negative accounts on your credit report, you have the right to dispute them. It's important to note that whether or not the account belongs to you or not makes no difference. The consumer reporting agency (CRA) has the responsiblity to verify it or else remove it. The CRA has 30 days from the time they receive your dispute and many times the creditor or the CRA can't or won't verify it in that time. At that point, it must be removed from your credit report.

There are numerous other ways to repair bad credit depending on your situation, however removing negative accounts is probably the fastest way. Keeping low balances on your credit cards is another way.

Repairing bad credit on your own is not easy unless you understand the consumer laws that govern CRAs, creditors and collection agencies. If you have time to learn the laws, I highly suggest that you do it. The information you will learn is invaluable and after all, they are your consumer rights.
