Default Sallie Mae trouble

OK here's the thing. I stupidly co-signed a Sallie Mae loan for my soon to be ex son-in-law. It was the 4th and final loan, as he was able to obtain the first 3 loans independently. The loan was for culinary school (not Harvard). Now, after several deferments, it's time for him to pay the loan payments and surprise surprise, he left my daughter and grandson, joined the Navy, and hasn't paid a dime. So now, the loan is going into default. I phoned Sallie Mae and was told that I was in the hole for the 4th loan for approx $3600.00 and so I made a payment. Yesterday, I pulled up my Equifax CR and found that it has been reported that I owe over 35,000!!! I phoned Sallie Mae again and was told that yes, that 4th and final loan is for over 35,000 dollars. First of all, there is no way on earth that culinary school tuition is so expensive that a loan for the final semester cost 35,000. I looked on their site and confirmed that. I then filed a dispute with Equifax re: the amt owed. Unfortunately, I do not have the loan papers, as they are with the dirtbag son-in-law. I did ask Sallie Mae to send a copy and they agreed to do so. Is there anything else I can do? This is REALLY dragging down what is already a pretty poor CR.
Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about your soon to be ex son-in-law, he sounds like a real asshole. I would contact a lawyer and see what you can do about suing him. I would also contact the Navy and anyone else who knows him to let them know what a piece of shit he is.

Sallie Mae is horrible to deal with. They are Nazis. They will verify every time and they refuse to be helpful in any way possible.

I wish I could help you more, but I don't really know what else to say on this one. Sorry.

Default Sallie Mae

Sallie Mae is impossible to work with. However, I would contact your ex-son-in-law's commanding officer and give him the name and address of the creditor (Sallie Mae), account number if you have it, and all the other information. The Navy will NOT tolerate late payments, and I don't know if they still do this, but it used to be that they would make the payments for him if necessary and then dock his pay.

That's a good idea, Jenni. I like that! Let us know if you try it and how everything works out, tlb350.
