I teach a class on college preparation, and I recently saw that $6 billion a year in scholarship money goes unclaimed. The main reason is that most scholarships are only worth $1000 or less, and people are reluctant to put the time into applying for what is only a drop in the bucket. Thing is, those drops add up. Also, you can find scholarships all over the place, and you should not pay for the service. There are plenty of websites that will ask you to sign up and pay a fee. But you are paying them to do the legwork you could do on your own. Do a search on wacky scholarships, ethnic scholarships, scholarships for people with your last name. Lycoming College in Pennsylvania used to have a scholarship for people who were left-handed with red hair. I'm sure there are other schools with silly things like that. Crazy alumni dies and leaves money to the college to do stuff like that. One of my recent students was up for a $200 duct tape scholarship becasue he went to Prom in a duct tape tux. Crazy, but true. Many companies, government aganecies, and service organizations offer free money. Many of them only get a few applications, if any. Might as well throw your wallet into the ring. Someone might drop a few hundred bucks in, and if you get enough small scholarships, you will do quite nicely.
