Hi,I'm 21 years old. When I turned 18 I started going to college. I could no longer afford paying for college by myself, and had to drop out during my 3rd semester. I've been working full time since starting college. Unfortunately, my parents are extremely wealthy, but strongly believe that any one 18 or older is on their own and should not receive any help from their parents. So when I applied for Financial Aid before, I didn't qualify for anything. On the other hand, my best friend has rich grandparents who pay for his college. And he has poor parents so he receives a lot of Financial Aid help. This seems very flawed and I am curious, Is there any way I could receive aid? Thanks

Your best option is to go to the financial aid office of the college that you are attending. They are the most up to date on what types of grants, loans, etc that you can get and they are there to help you. There is also something called the PLUS loan, but your parents would have to co-sign for this. Give your financial aid office a try. They should be able to help.

Since you're over 18 yrs. old you can claim yourself on your income tax which will help out alot. Also, you may want to itemize various things, for example, if you use your car for work you can itemize on your tax form. I know of alot of people that have gone on fastweb.com, which is a website that offers various scholarships and other information about financial aid. You may want to consider taking out a personal loan..for example once you get on fastweb.com they will link you to private loans which require you to have a satisfactory credit score. Once you link up to fastweb.com you will se other sites you can go to. I hope everything turn out positive for you. Also, consider Federal Government assistance, which is called FASFA (check the spelling). I wish you the best.
