Default Does filing for bankruptcy keep you from...

...getting federal stafford loans? I think that is happening to me.? I filed for bankruptcy in 2005. I was going through a bad time in my life to say the least. At the time I felt I had no other choice. I have lost friends and relationships because of filing for bankruptcy but a lot of positive things have happened since I filed. I am slowly but surely rebuilding my credit. This fall should be my last semester of college! YAY!! I want to get a better job and begin fully rebuilding my life. I filed for financial aid for this summer and fall. I am halfway through my summer semester and thought I could pay for it with a stafford loan. My loan was for 2,750. I just got a letter in the mail today stating that the loan was denied due to bankruptcy. I am so depressed about this situation right now. I really need loan money to pay for this summer and fall. I want to call AES but am worried about how customer service will react to my inquiry. Will my grants also be cancelled? Please don't judge me for my bad credit.

If you filed for bankruptcy it will be hard to get a loan or credit for anything. Bankruptcy may get rid of your old debt, but it makes it that much harder for a person to build new credit by not being able to qualify for numerous credit agencies...my mom filed for bankruptcy like 11 years ago thinking she'd be in the clear, but trust me shes had an extremely difficult time getting a primo credit rating over the years....but , yes, it could very well keep you from qualifying.....sorry..
