I am repairing my credit due to a recent account I had with springleaf financial. they sent me a letter the other day stating that I need to pay the settlement balance or I will be sued, they also stated that If I pay it It will be removed from collection and the account will reflect paid in full. The amount listed on this letter was $0.00 on the top portion that I was to return to them as well as in the body of the letter I sent them a check for $0.00 can they come back and say it was an error and try to collect. Its their mistake so they should be more careful is my thought.

The very fact that they sent the letter demonstrates that they do consider a balance to be owed on the account. It defies logic to hold an obvious typo as an admission on their part of $0 debt owed. Sending them a check for $0 is not offering a negotiable instrument of any value. You apparently have, and concede knowledge of, the debt. I see no basis to support a defensible position that their obvious administrative error negates the debt. I would not want to go before a judge and argue that position... |

I did file a complaint with the Attorney General and Springleaf/American General admitted their mistake and honored the $0 balance in writing. I received a letter stating its now closed and nothing is owed it was just removed from my Credit report as well.
