Thumbs up Equifax Validation Letter Doesn't Match Credit Report

I sent a letter to Equifax asking them to validate an old collection and they verified it with the information expected. However they updated my credit report with false data.

In this case my collection was paid on 01/2007 and closed on 02/2007 this is what they sent me in the mail.

However they updated my credit report with derogatory information randomly in 2009 and show it as reporting OK every month until even last month. None of this is correct.

I believe the collection agency has verified the wrong account for me since this is also found on my Experian information except it is randomly different, closing in 2010 on that report.

What do I do in this case? Do I request details from the CA? Can I use this to my advantage?

A bit confusing.

You state that you sent a validation letter to the CRA.

CRAs have no part in the debt validation process. DV letters can only be sent to a debt collector.

The CRA apparently treated it as a dispute under FCRA 611(a). If your letter did not identify the specific inaccuracies in credit reporting, then the dispute was verifiable, and even dismissible without any need for investigation.

What specifically did you identify as inaccurate reporting?

If it was updated reporting, then how was it inaccurate?

Any party, be they a creditor or debt collector, is entitled to continue to report to a CRA indefinitely, as long as what they report is accurate.

They will often file continued status reports to a CRA long after an account is closed and paid. As long as the status accurately reflects the current status of the account, it is permissible. It is not a change in status or substance of information of record. Most parties wont bother to do that after the account is closed and paid because it is wasted time and resources. However, nothing prevents them from continued reporting.

Based upon what you have stated, I see no grounds for asserting improper reporting.
