Default Woman with similiar SSN

There just happens to be a woman with a SSN that is just 1 number off from mine, we also have the same first name, although spelled differently. My husband and I purchased a vehicle September of last year and although her info was disputed and taken off my credit report several months before, I still had to produce a "new me" letter from the social security office.

I have Identity Guard, which only allows me to see my credit every 3 months, so as of yet, nothing of hers has come on my credit report again. However, I get public alerts from Identity Guard and her name again came up along with mine, what is disturbing to me is that now her name is not only coming up spelled the same as mine, but her middle name which began with an M is now fully my middle name, which begins with an altogether different letter.

I don't know what to do, according to the older credit report which did have her info on mine, it seems as if she has a criminal record and lives in Hawaii. I don't live in Hawaii and have no criminal record, but this worries me even more...I don't think she's doing this on purpose, but it is effecting my ability to repair my credit, because even after disputed I still had to get a "new me" letter to get our car.

What if she finds out, she could be the kind of person to take advantage of this, especially with a criminal record? During the time I was disputing this with the credit reporting agencies, one of the operators let it slip that we are 1 number off from each other and actually told me what that number was! So I know her SSN, what if another not so brilliant operators gives her my SSN?

My husband and I plan to refi our home next year and I don't want any trouble. It's just scary to me that her name is emerging into mine. The only thing now separating us is the 1 number off our SSN, our last name and the states wee live in, which btw, she was born and lived in my state prior to Hawaii residence. Ugh!

Edited to add: I did a search on my name through the usual people searches and her name is now tied to mine as if we are the same person. I can dispute night and day, but I need a solution that will fix this permanently.

As it stands right now, is there anything on any of your 3 credit reports that have incorrect information on it?

If it's an issue of her using your information to get credityYou may want to put a freeze on your credit reports. It's a pain in the ass but if you're having these kind of troubles from her it may be your only option. That will keep anyone (yourself included) from opening any new credit under your name. They can be a real bear to get removed just so you know but she won't be able to open any more credit in your name.

If I were you I'd pull my credit reports and see if there is anything not yours on them and then place a fraud alert on them and dispute whatever isn't yours. You may also want to consider filing out a police report on the items that are on your report that aren't yours so you can have a case number to provide the CRA's to better help get them removed.

If it's not ID theft and someone else's credit information is just being reported on your reports you need to contact the CRA immediately and tell them to fix it. This is a serious problem.

Oh! and just an FYI, What the social security administration gives you is called a "numi" not a "new me" it stands for "numident".

Just for future readers that might stumble across this thread, a numident is a record on the application for each SSN. It contains your name, place and date of birth, and other information like that.
