Default not sure how to proceed

I had a legit bill that I had paid in full. A $5 co-pay for a medical visit. I was given a hand written receipt for this, several years ago. I had a collection agency attempt to collect on the *unpaid bill*. I used the online dispute before I knew what I was doing saying that I paid the bill it is an error. They ( equifax ) said it was valid.

so where do I go from here? Can I still request a validation ? Can I do the 623 thing ?

Seriously 5 measly bucks ! I've paid thousands and thousands of dollars back on time, my credit report is flawless ! Why would anyone believe I wouldn't pay a measly 5 bucks ?!?! Is the burden of proof on me to keep a receipt for several years ?

thanks

If it's only reporting on Equifax, send them a letter disputing it again. Equifax is the easiest CRA to deal with.

You may also send the CA a debt validation letter or you may simply tell them to remove it from your credit report immediately as you have paid it. If they say no, you may want to sue them. You may also want to send them a copy of the receipt.

Well there's the rub and why I asked if the burden of proof is upon me, I don't have a hand written receipt for $5 from 4 years ago to give them

many many thanks for the reply and any further assistance, Jeff

As far as burden of proof, if you request validation, then they must prove you owe it, by sending the information you requested in the debt validation letter.
