Default Verizon gave me a charge off for no reason

OK, this one is serious BS. I switched to Sprint Feb 19th and cancelled Verizon. My wife split our remaining balance of $290.00 with Verizon into three equal payments (cancelation fee included). She paid off Verizon in LESS THAN 60 DAYS WITH THREE PAYMENTS.

My "ID Gaurd" sent me a notice that something had changed on my credit reports. I checked..... Verizon was reporting a charge off for $290.00 AFTER it was already paid off. We never recieved late notices, collection notices, or anything during those 45+ days she made the three pmt's.

I called Verizon two weeks ago and they said no problem....we'll remove it. ID Gaurd notified me again today. Verizon left the charge off but changed the balance to $0.00.

I called Verizon back and this is what the F___ing supervisor told me...... When you cancel your service it must be paid in full immediatley. I said, the acct never even went 30 days without a pmt and you cannot put a charge off on my credit when I never went 30-60-and 90 days WITHOUT MAKING ANY PMT AT ALL. He said yes we can and we do it to people every day and it is perfectly legal. Next time pay your final bill in full when you get your statement. When I told him I would never use Verizon again no matter how good the deal he said.... We are the largest mobile carrier in the world, I don't think you never coming back will make or break us...

I could have jumped through the phone and bitch slapped the piss out of him. The bill was so high because of the cancelation fee of $200.00. So we got a charge off for not paying the cancelation fee within 30 days.

I left a message with the CEO Lowell McAdams assistant....

Any other advice???

BOYCOTT VERIZON...

Chane or Trish...... can a company give you a charge off if you have never gone even 30 days without a payment? My wife made a payment on this bill every two weeks when she got paid for 6 weeks.

What can I do to get this charge off off the credit? I mean what BS and total lack of respect for our credit...

That is bullshit. Try disputing it first. If that doesn't work, keep calling until you get someone who will remove it. Call them 10 times a day if you have to. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Chane, they can't give you a "charge off" in this situation can they per the FCRA? I mean, we paid the final bill off in less than 6 weeks with three payments.

Always something when you are trying to get your scores back up over 700....

Technically, I think they can. Anything after 30 days that is not paid in full can be "charged off". They should remove it though since it was paid and not technically charged off to a collection agency. I would just dispute it.

UPDATE: so I talked with some supposed high up. He states that Verizon has a policy that the bill must be paid in full after service is cancelled within 120 days. OK, don't shoot me but my wife dugg up the payment history and it is a little diff than I previously stated.

Here is the timeline:

1. Service cancelled DEC 7th. She called for a final statement to include the "cancelation fee" of $200.00.

2. She got a bill, but not the final Jan 2.

3. So she paid $50.00 Jan 3rd.

4. Did not get an updated statement and final bill until FEB 7th or so.

5. Tried to pay it off in full online on Feb 15th or so like always but the account was closed with no access. She called and they said mail a check.

6. She mailed a check for the remaining balance of $290.39 Feb 27th.

7. They processed the payment to a zero balance on the acct March 10th

WE NEVER RECEIVED ONE LATE NOTICE, COLLECTION NOTICE, PHONE CALL, OR ANYTHING. Verizon guy originally told me they will not report a charge off unless you do not make one single pmt for 120 days. We paid off the acct in full in far less than that. NOW HE SAYS...they cannot remove the charge off because the account was not paid in full within 120 days. The guy makes no F-ing sense what so ever...

THE QUESTION:

Chane, per the FCRA, don't they have to notify you if they are going to place something adverse on your credit report???

Honestly, I don't know. I don't think they do, but I'm not sure. I know that if they delete something and put it back on they do, but I don't know if they have to notify you before they do.
