Think i posted this in the wrong section can an admin move it to the correct place please. Hey guys I need some advice on where to go. I am not sure if I need to see a lawyer first or a Credit repair specialist. Here is the story. After a bad breakup I had tons of debt and no job so all my debt defaulted except my car. This was about 5 years ago and now everything has been bought and sold so many times I dont know who I would even pay. Credit score is about 490 ehhhhh. I make good money and am ready to pay everything or whatever I need to do. I know that pretty much all of the debt is past the statute of limitations but obviously its still all on there as chargeoffs. Not sure where to start. If I go through credit repair and they remove the items isnt there a good chance they will come back on my report ? Or should I go through a lawyer who wants more money upfront to dispute them and work out plans to pay back. My credit report is 50 some pages long so I dont feel comfortable trying to do this myself. Advice please. Thanks Cody Last edited by pc_porter; 11-06-2009 at 04:40 PM. Reason: posted wrong area |

Hi Cody.... Welcome ![]() I understand if you have that many derogatory accts, it may seem overwhelming. It is possible to do things yourself.....but in the end it's totally up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I personally started out with about the same credit score as you with over 30 negative TLs....most of them were medical. It has taken some time and effort but I am now down to 2 negatives and have increased the number of positive TLs which has gotten my score up almost 200 points. It can be done. Start off here by reading this: Basic Step by Step Beginner's Guide to Credit Repair It kind of breaks it down for you step by step and lets you know where to start. If you are feeling lost and need help prioritizing/triaging your reports, you can post questions for guidance. One good thing going for you is..... if everything is out of SOL, then at least you don't have the fear of being sued (I was not so fortunate...). The other thing that will help is your ability and willingness to pay if necessary. Some of the creditors or collection agencies may be willing to settle for less since they are several years old. Some may be very easy to get off of your reports........others will try to stick like glue......but it's always worth trying. ANYWAY...... start by reading and looking around on the forum for similar situations. Feel free to post questions and we will do our best to help you.....whatever you decide.
