Default Returning Equipment

First off I would like to say thank you! Great community, and some very helpful information here.

After running my Credit Report I have found that I have 2 major issues really hurting me. One being Comcast Cable. I canceled my service about 5 months ago, and never returned the equipment, they were supposed to pick it up, but did not. On principle alone I did not return it, feeling that after all of the poor service they should come get it!

Well now I have learned not to let principles and pride get in the way of protecting your credit! Getting to my situation they sent me to there collection agency for a $490 unpaid (value of the equipment). When I spoke with Eastern they have my name spelled wrong, and had a lot of trouble finding my account. Could be a good thing?

Next I called Comcast, and they said that they did not put me into collections (they did). I told them I would be willing to return the equipment, but they would have to delete. They told me they were unable to, but the local office could do this when I go there to return the equipment. This sounds a little fishy to me. Anyway, I would like to return this to them, but it seems like the only leverage I have right now. Any advice? Should I go there and return the equipment, or should I dispute it first, and then return? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's Eastern Account Systems which is the CA. I have since returned the equipment, and am now working on disputing the accounts with the CRA. What is most frustrating is that before doing any research I paid the CA $202 for my last bill which was only 2 months late. The only reason they picked it up was because I canceled my Comcast Account and switched to Verizon. Because of so many issues with there service I told them I would pay them when they picked up the equipment. Why should I make a trip across town and wait in a line to return there equipment because there service was horrible? I have since learned what is right is not always what is right for your credit!
