Default Where do I start?

I have been putting this off for years now, but my credit is becoming increasingly important with a growing family. I have recently been relocated for my job and I need to have at least a 620 in order to qualify for my VA loan thru the relocation company I am working with. Needless to say, both my wife and I have terrible credit scores due to very poor financial habits. I have a 485 and my wife has a 508. After reading this site, I have done the following:

-Ordered all three CR for both of us
-Opted out for the both of us

It appears that the major "setbacks" on our credit reports are student loans / medical bills. The student loans foreclosed for the both of us and appears to be a MAJOR issue. After reading this site, it appears that the next step is the 1-2 punch.

My question is this, how quickly or humanly possible will it take to get to 620 for my wife and I?[*]Opted out[/LIST]
