Default legal question

I have a question(s). Because i was dumb and nieve when I was younger i made some bad mistakes. Such as getting credit cards. I also had some hard times when things went wrong. But none the less I have made exteme efforts to clean up my credit. Now some of my bills went into collection in which we agreeded upon a settlement. I payed two of these bills two years ago. The agreement was I payed the bill and they would help fix my credit. I had a phone two diffrent phone calls to two diffrent companies saying that i stilled owed them money. My questioons are this?
1. How do I double check to see if my credit/bills are actually being repaired
2. Do I get a lawyer to help me get these matters solved? (I still have the paper work and the agreements for these agreements)
3. Who do I contact the group in collection ( who is not doing their jobs? Or the company who made the agreement? Should not the company who made the agreement havefixed this problem?

I am just trying to be an honest person. I am trying my best to pay my bills. But feel like I am still paying extra for mistakes I made a long time ago. Could some one point me in the right direction.

Thanks forany and all help

1. Pull your credit reports.
2. You don't need a lawyer.
3. Just because you paid a collection doesn't mean it will come off your report. It usually will stay on your report for 7 years. If you didn't get it in writing that they would remove the item from your report, than they don't have to remove it.

There are other methods for getting negative items removed, though. Start with the Introduction to Credit Repair guide.

Read over it thoroughly and try to get a general understanding of the whole credit repair concept. It will teach you the techniques you need to know to clean up your credit the best way possible. If you have any other questions, just let us know.
