Default Victim of Identity Theft

I believe I have been the victim of identity theft. What should I do or rather how do I start taking matters in my own hands to find out the truth? This was a supposedly good friend whom did this to me!!! I don`t know where to start.

Are there some good websites that I can go on to try and help me?

Put an intial fraud alert on your credit report. You can do this by calling the credit bureaus. Get your credit report and dispute anything that the person has in your name.

Most identity theft is done by someone that you know, are close to or related to.

The FTC has entire web pages directed to what you need to do to protect yourself and if your credit has been compromised. There is a lot that has to be done and if your identity has been stolen, chances are this will be a long process - about a year before it is really over. The problem with identity theft is that it is so unclear. This is one area that in my opinion is where you must prove your innocence.
