It should work every time...if you do it right. Tell them you have come accross some money and would like to pay off some old debts. However, you have other collectors you owe and are limited as to how many accounts you can pay so you will have to work with the ones that cooperate with you. If they chose not to cooperate with you, you will end up paying the others that did.

This completely lets you manipulate and leverage the situation.

Offer them 50% of what you owe. They can only say no and counter offer. Try to get them to remove it for as little as possible.

Just remember to always do it in writing and to always get them to promise in writing that they will remove it. You can negotiate much better through letters. You have much more leverage than if you would do it on the phone with someone who is pressuring you, lying to you and harrassing you.
