Default Repairing credit question?

If I pay off small balances that have been sent to collections will this bring up my credit score or how will it affect it? Can closed/paid accounts be deleted from your credit report? What if the say they wont delete it but will mark it as paid, will this help my score, can i dispute it and have it deleted later?Do closed paid off accounts affect your credit score
