I haven't used one but I have heard from more than one person that having used one makes you look even worse to creditors. Pay off your debts, get a credit card (secured, if necessary), use it regularly (for everyday necessities like gas and groceries, not a 50" plasma) and make your payments on time... also, make sure you pay more than the minimum each month, but not necessarily the entire balance. This will show creditors that you can manage debt.
