I just recently started combing through my credit report because I have finally have the finances to start paying off old past debts. I noticed that a bill for a cable company went to collections, and the collections agency posted it three different times on my credit report. Not only that, I just noticed that they all have different account numbers. Is this legal? What are the proper steps to take at this point?

If it is based on the same debt, then it can only be reported as a single collection. I would dispute the accuracy of the reporting by sending a direct dispute to the debt collector, asserting duplicate reporting of the same item of information.

You should also dispute them directly with the credit bureaus as being duplicates.
