Default Statute of limitations

State and federal laws limit how long a creditor has to collect a debt from you. What you may not know is that if enough time has passed, you may not even have to pay back a debt anymore.

I think you have it backwards. If expiration of the SOL is proven in court, that relieves you of legal obligation to pay the debt. Expiration of SOL does not foreclose further attempts at collection of the debt. A debt collector is not prevented from contacting you, or continuing debt collection activities, due to expiration of an SOL. Theoretically, they can continue debt collection attempts forever.

If you are certain that your SOL has expired, you can then send the debt collector a cease further communications letter under FDCPA 805(c), and thus terminate their further communications with you without any peril of their obtaining a legal judgment against you.
