hey everyone I found something on my credit report, it was from a comcast bill that I had and when I canceled my service apparently I had an outstanding bill for $128.00, which I was unaware of until I called Comcast to get new service and they informed me of it and I paid it right there over the phone. But there's a listing on my credit report for a collection agency for the bill, although it does say "paid collection" I never paid it to them, I paid it right to Comcast. Are they allowed to do this? I thought if you pay the OC and handle the debt with the OC that the CRA has to take it off your report. Thank you |

They aren't going to take it off your report unless you ask. They really have no motivation to remove a negative item unless you take the initiative. Credit Dispute Letters - Sample Dispute Letters |

No, unfortunately not. I have the EXACT same thing with COX cable on my credit reports. I just haven't sweated it as much as it's scheduled to fall off of my credit report in October. So it's an awful lot of work to get something removed that's going to be removed from my report in 5 months anyway.

No, payment of the debt, whether to the debt collector or the OC, does not compel either party to remove their prior, accurate credit reporting. In fact, the CRA reporting manual clearly instructs those who report to them NOT to delete accounts based on payment of the debt. If you pay the OC, that terminates the collection authority of the debt collector. All that requires the debt collector to do is to update the balance under collection to $0, and cease any further collection activities. Payment of a debt does not render prior, accurate reporting invalid or inaccurate, and does not compel account deletion. |
