Hi everyone, I am new to the forums but am desperate to find some concrete information regarding my rights. I just received a notification from a collection agency on a 14-year old medical bill. I have not been contacted about this debt for at least 11 years and had totally forgotten about this issue. Based on the SOL for Ohio (which is 6 years for open accounts, I believe) would it be appropriate for me to send a letter to the CA disputing this debt and citing that the SOL for this type of debt has expired? I have found a template to send to the CA but the verbiage is pretty strong and honestly, I have never tried to dispute anything in my life so the whole concept is freaking me out. However, with a bill this old I feel I do have rights according to the FDCPA. I have never paid anything toward this bill so the timeline for the SOL should have begun in February of 1996 but how can I be sure? Is this something the CA could provide in a verification of debt? Sorry to sound so wishy-washy but I've really never had to deal with anything like this before and considering how much time has gone by my memories of this situation are vague. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you! |
