Default Debt collector threatening to sue

What do I do about debt collector that is threatening to sue who will not accept payments? I owe a student loan (among other things) for 2700 dollars, and I have admittedly avoided paying it for a few years now. When the debt was new I was 18 and the company in question harassed me and made me cry on a daily basis, so I have avoided it. I am 22 now and working and I want to get this off my record and off my back. I want to send them payments of what I can afford, but they refuse to accept anything other than payment in full. Today I got a letter stating they will "recommend legal referral as necessary...PAYNOW IF THIS ACTIVITY IS TO BE STOPPED! ! !" They are not decent people and it's already hard for me to call them and be humiliated and degraded, but they also won't accept any payments I can afford. What should I do?

Contact a consumer credit service and ask them to act as a mediator. They will negotiate a repayment plan for you. If you have other debts, they can help you with that, too. Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) should be in your local phone book. They can also provide money management training and you will feel more confident handling these matters in the future before it gets to this point. Good Luck!
