Collection Agency Questions

How do I know if my negative items were sent to a collection agency? There are a couple of things on my report that I do not recognize, can I just assume that those are collection agencies. Also I have something on there from a car that was financed several years ago and wrecked. I thought the insurance co had paid it all off, but now that it is showing I owe who should I contact?-the initial creditor or my insurance co for never telling me i owed more money. any help would be appreciated.

Usually on the credit report, the account numbers will be similar. You may also want to look at the amounts and the dates.

If you are unsure of them, dispute them. The burden of proof is on the collection agencies. If they can't verify, it must be deleted.

I would also dispute the car loan and contact who ever is reporting it. It wouldn't hurt to contact the insurance company either.
