Default Do you think bill collectors are unethical?

I am a paralegal in the collections department at a large law firm. People constantly are telling me how unethical I am, and how wrong it is to garnish somebody's wages, etc. Honestly, its the highlight of my day when I find somebody's place of employment (so I can file a wage garnishment) after they have been hiding from me for a year or longer. Does that make me a bad person?Yes I am a licensed paralegal, thank you very much. I also have a B.A. in English, since you're so interested in my education. Why you would assume you know anything about how I've been trained or what kind of debt the firm handles, I have no idea. You may think I'm settling for this as a career, but its the most money I've ever made in my life...and the most fun I've ever had at work. So, I think I'll stick with it for awhile!

No. It is unethical to borrow money or use services without paying for them. It is fine for the company to try to collect. However, bill collectors are people too and can certainly behave in an unethical way, just like anybody else.

I worked with repo company for 4 years. I loved my job until one day I went out to pick up a car from an old lady, and I was shot at! She didnt pay her car note and she was mad at us! I think the reason some collectors are unethical is because no matter how they go about taking your stuff your always gonna be mad.

No, I don't. It's the peoples fault they are in trouble in the first place. Granted it depends on the situation. I worked in a dr's office and I hated hearing about how they couldn't make payments on things and what not because they were backed up on bills because their spouse passed away, and it was awful when we had to call them and tell them their account was going to be sent to collections if they didn't start making a payment plan with the office. (glad I didn't work in the billing dept)Other than that... the people shouldn't have been racking up debt after debt and kept going and going, for those people, i have no sympathy.

I am LMAO right now. I am a finance manager and I too get excited when I finally can track someone down or receive money for a wage garnishment. Sometimes legal action is the only way I can get people to pay their bills. I am willing to work with customers as long as I receive some type of payment, regardless of the amount. I am sure that some companies have unethical bill collectors; however, I know my company is not one of them. As long as you are not unethical then you are not a bad person...just one that enjoys her job!
