You may also want to recommend these are sent certified signature required. The data in the dispute letters allow a person with identity theft in mind to go to town.

Certified signature required allows you to know it reached it's destination. If their is a problem it allows you to better track the problem.

Also, regarding including a copy of the Social Security card; I was able to dispute items without that, I was only required to include the last four of my social security number. Things may have changed in 3 years, but I would recommend that people without their entire SS# until it is requested and only then when you know for sure who you are talking to.

Hmm, I've read in many places that sending "signature required" mail will get denied by the credit bureaus. I've done thousands of disputes for clients and have never sent a certified signature required mail. It's expensive and it pisses off the credit bureaus.

Is it bad to dispute it on their website through the internet? TransUnion has an online dispute form. I would rather do it that way, but would that be bad? Will it work against me? And how do you legally track your letter if you send it through the mail so that you can prove you sent it? Delivery confirmation?? All this business and paperwork nonsense is not my area of interest and expertise..

They would rather you dispute online, because it's easier for them, plus they limit your reasons as to why you are disputing an account...they make you choose between a few things.

But, what most people don't know is that you don't have to give them a reason and many times you shouldn't give them a reason. The burden of proof is on them, you don't have to say "not mine" (and shouldn't say that unless it truly isn't yours). All you need to say is "please verify this account or remove it". That tells them that you dispute the account and requests an investigation WITHOUT giving them a reason. Let them figure out why it is reporting incorrectly. It's their job, not yours.

It's much more effective and smarter, in my opinion, to write a letter.

Ah! Ok, I see!!! Sorry, everything needs to make rational sense to me. I am not a game player though and have a hard time understanding why everyone is so full of it in this world in the first place.

"But, what most people don't know is that you don't have to give them a reason and many times you shouldn't give them a reason."

Yes, I did get that part. So they try to cheat you.. I see. Thanks! This site is amazing! You're so much help! I like to do things myself just because I like to learn how things work but I do hate all this nonsense. Like how people pay income taxes they don't have to because of some cleverly rearranged statutes. It's all so ridiculous how easily people are cheated by the system. You're doing a great service to everyone here!

I sent a letter to Experian about 3 weeks ago and finally got a response recently. They said they couldn't investigate the dispute saying they wanted to know why I was disputing. They said I can use reasons like, "not mine" paid in full" "innacurate" etc. what is up with that?

I sent this letter right after I received their belated response.

[Name]
[Address]
[city] [state] [zip]

Social Security Number: XXX-XX-XXXX
Date of Birth: XX/XX/19XX

Experian
2220 Ritchey
Santa ana, CA 92705

6/20/08

Dear Experian,

I am writing to dispute incorrect information on my credit report. Report number, XXXXXXXXXX

The following names are innacurate:
Name identification numbers: XXXX, XXXX, XXXX, XXXX, XXXXX, XXXXX and XXXXX

The following addresses are innacurate:
Address identification numbers: XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX

Please delete the erroneous information as soon as possible. Thank you. Sincerely, (printed name)

No. Do not send dispute letters CMRR unless you need proof in court and/or you are sending the dispute to the CRA legal dept. Even then CM only would probably be ok. CMRR on a regular dispute looks like a CRO....those along with all of the regular typed up form letters are processed and sent through to the dept where it is all computerized (just like online disputing). Human hands will never touch those letters.....and that lessens your chance of a deletion.

If you want proof or a way to track your letter.....send it CM only. Handwritten if possible. If not, use purple or teal italic font because their computers cannot scan those.

I got tired of spending so much money and now I only send my dispute via regular mail. Only time I use CM is when I know I will need proof.

Just my .02

Just thought maybe it would be a good idea to post them in this thread?

They're scattered all over the place. Here they are:

Equifax
P. O. Box 740241
Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

TransUnion
P. O. Box 1000
Chester,PA 19022

Experian
2220 Ritchey
Santa Ana, CA 92705

Depending on where you live in the US, they have different addresses. However, if you send it to one of these, it will get sent to the appropriate place and there will be a return address on the letter they send you. Use that one for any further communication with them.
