I went through bankruptcy recently. There are different ways to approch it. You can get a lawyer and have them take care of everything, but that can cost upwards of $2.000.00 dollars or more. There is an organization called"We the People" where you can pay a fee to get all the neccessary papers to file bankruptcy, that is how I did it, but I also had to do a lot of on line studying to properly prepare myself, and also is required by law to complete 2 classes about money management, but they are only 1 or 2 hours each. Also I heard you can go to the federal court house and request the neccessary papers to file bankruptcy for much less than "We the People" however I was not aware of that until after I filed using their service. It cost me about $800.00 dollars in all, to use this method. If I could have came up with the lawyer fee's, that is how I would have done it, but I was successful in the alternative method, filing on my own. "We the People" also can not legally give you any advice, because that is concidered practicing law and can get in hot water, so it is a long tedious process, but I am happy I chose to do it because there is life after bankruptcy, I hope this helps you in some way.

Best seek advice from an attorney as the Bankruptcy laws were changed this year and it is a lot harder to totally wipe out all of your debt. Credit cards are unsecured debt so I wouldn't give them a whole lot of attention but, be ready for TONS of collection calls untill you advise these agencies to contact your attorney . Also you are protected by The Federal Fair Debt Practices Collections Act(et. seq. 1692 (c)(a)(1).Best of Luck ! Also as a side note there are 3 types of bankruptcy. So talk to an attorney !
