How do I file for bankruptcy?

I'm an Oregon resident, have about 40k in debt that I can't pay any of and have no income. Please walk me through the steps. Thanks a lot.

Get all of your bills together and go talk to a lawyer that handles bankruptcies. He will tell you what you need and will take care of it from there. You also will probably need money for his services ,after the first visit etc., but he will inform you what need to do.

You have a couple of choices in regards to bankruptcy: There's CH 13 bankruptcy, aka, 'wage earner's bankruptcy' and CH 7 bankruptcy, aka, 'liquidation bankruptcy'. Since you've already mentioned that you have no income, it certainly seems that CH 7 is your only/best option. Don't let the liquidation title scare your socks off. You're entitled to the necessities of life, which includes a car, home, and clothes. Usually, the bankruptcy trustee will act on the best interests of yourself and the court. The state of Oregon likely doesn't want to create more homeless people as ordinary people like yourself are filing for bankruptcy in record numbers.
