If the executor of an estate files bankruptcy, how does
this affect the assets in the estate? If the executor spent or leveraged my inheritance, what legal recourse do I have?

Was it within their defined role to be allowed to spend or leverage the inheritance? If this was within their role, then you likely have no recourse. If it went outside of their role, you could possibly file a suit against them. It all depends on what the executor was legally allowed to do, and if he acted within that role.
