Live and learn, eh? Be honest with yourselves and examine your lifestyle. Got cable?, Several cell phones? Internet service, obviously? Got magazine subscriptions; go out to dinner a lot? Nice stereo system... Yes, you can file bankruptcy, but you'll be in the same boat again if you don't manage your money. We live in the greatest country in the world with unlimited opportunity, just think about it. I would recommend you contact each of your creditors, (smallest to biggest) and make a serious offer of 10% or 15% as settlement for the entire debt. Be sure you have the cash in hand and get a written confirmation that they will settle the entire amount for what you are offering. Make the offer on the condition that they remove any bad information from your credit report. They will most likely take it, especially if they have not received any money at all from you. Most won't take a settlement if they already have a judgement against you and are garnishing your wages. Check out Crown Financial Ministries.Org for some help.

Not knowing precisely your situation I would seek out a lawyer, but not just any lawyer. Visit Naca.net for list of consumer lawyers who will likely be able to sort out better for you where your exact situation is. You may have judgments out of SOL which will be a big help to you. However, someone who is looking at your credit report will be able to tell you for sure. Bankruptcy should be a last resort. Good luck!
