Default Can I use a student loan to buy a car.?

I was lucky enough to have the first 2 years of college covered by a scholarship. For my last two years it will only cover 75% of my tuition. I am going to be commuting 80 miles(this includes there and back) to school 3 days a week. I have a car but it is really old and is not reliable. I know that when you apply for a government studen loan they send it to the school and any left over cash gets sent to you. However, I'm wondering about the other student loans out there that you can get on top of the government one... are those okay to use for a car, in my case it would be a student expense. I'm planning on using 11,000 or less on a car. I figure that I haven't had to take out any loans and since I only have 2 years left that in the future it still won't be that much to pay back after I graduate. especially compared to people who have had to use loans for all of their tuition, books, meal plans, and housing. If I can't get a car I probably won't make it through the school year with the one I have. That is the closest Bachelor program to me. I don't mind having to pay it back. There is no way I could get a car now, I don't make enough money and wouldn't be able to going to school. I'm planning on getting a car that will last me through paying the loan back. So I need to know if there are any student loans out there that will allow me to do this, not a government loan but I private one.to answer one of the questions.. I need more than 5,000 because I am looking into a car that will last me through paying my loan back. That way, I don't have to be paying a car loan and a student loan. I doubt I can find a car that will be good with gas, last the long with minimal problems and have a lower mileage at that price or lower.

You can do this technically, but I wouldn't advise it. When you come out of college, the last thing you want is to have more debt than you need.

depends on the loan but the loans cover tuition books food lodging and trasportation so if you have enuff money with the loans then you can buy a car.

you can use anything you want to buy a car. Its you that will have to pay back the loan after you graduate anyways. The loan is meant to help you out with school, so if you run out, dont ask for more, cause they might not give it to you, or if they do, thats just more you have to pay back (and % is pretty rough) esp if you dont have a job. Grace period only lasts for so long after you graduate.

Congrats on getting this far w/o loans. On the cash sent to you from the gov't loan you might be ok to buy a car because transportation charges are allowed . On other loans you would have to read the fine print and be honest with your lender.
