Default secured cards versus pre-paid debit cards

If you want to build up new credit, make sure you get a secured credit card instead of a pre-paid debit card. The debit card activity won't show up on your credit report, but several secured credit card companies will report the amount that you place in security as a "credit limit" and also provide payment information to the credit bureaus. Many big box banks such as BofA, Wells and others offer debit card options that don't help you improve your credit.

check out secured credit cards and try to find one that reports to all three major credit bureaus and also pays interest on the amount that you put into the security account.

If you are going to put the cash up front, you might as well get the maximum benefit out of it.
