Default when to dispute vs. Pay for delete

My credit score at the moment is 548 according to equifax. I have several collections, a repossesion and late payments on my credit report.

How do I know when to dispute and when to send the CA a pfd letter?

I can't tell for sure if all the late payments on my report are being accurately reported or not. I know that one of my credit cards through capital one ended up in collection after they told me that my payment to thhem was an hour late (even if it was made on the due date), this gave me a late payment fee that brought me over the credit limit, which then resulted in a over limit fee....after that, it spun out of control and it eventually ended up in collection.

I guess, waht I want to know is: can I safely dispute a collection item even though it may very well be reported correctly?, or do I in this case send the CA a pfd letter, hoping they will accept a offer?

Thanks in advance for any help regarding this
