Wellcome to the forums. Well I know that it is better to get bad items removed from your reports than to update them. There several types of powreful letters you can use in order to legally accomplish the removal of negative items. If you've already updated them, it may be very difficult to remove them. In my experience, I've actually had collection accounts removed just by paying the original creditor.
Also, if you have any open credit card accounts, it would be in your best interest NOT to close them. Just try to keep the balance low. About 10 percent of your credit line. Closing credit accounts are one of those weird things that lowers your score. Good luck!
