With the current state of the economy, having a strong credit score is more important than ever. Unfortunately, common misconceptions about credit and how your credit score can be improved ultimately do more harm than good. With a sea of credit repair companies promising flawless credit, it can be easy to succumb to misinformation. Here are three common credit myths that could potentially damage your credit score:

Myth: Once a Debt is Charged-Off, I Don’t Have to Pay It

Charge-offs may seem like a positive at first, namely because the term sounds very similar to a “discharged” debt, which is one that has been cleared. Charged-off debts, despite the similar-sounding name, do not clear you of the obligation to pay the debt. Instead, it is an indication that the company does not believe you will pay the debt and therefore it has been removed from their accounts receivable. It essentially makes your debt an expense on the record books of the company, but that does not relieve you of responsibility. Charged-off debt classifies you as a ‘high-risk’ to many credit issuing companies, and can severely impact your ability to get future credit.

One Caveat: if the debt is past the time allowed by your state to collect, you don’t have to repay the debt, whether it’s been charged-off or not. Typically, the age of the debt has to be anywhere from 4-6 years before this is the case, but because these regulations vary by state, it’s best to check your local laws to be sure you’re in the clear.

Myth: Credit Repair Services Can Erase All Negative Credit Information, Even if it’s Legitimate

Reputable companies won’t promise to erase legitimate debts. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you are allowed to challenge debts that you believe to be erroneous or questionable. That does not mean that you should challenge any and all debts. In fact, doing so may result in collection agencies and bill collectors ignoring any legitimate requests you may make to have truly erroneous information removed. This is because if the company feels that your dispute is ‘frivolous’ they can ignore it, and leave the debt on your credit report.

There are numerous ways to have negative items on your credit report removed. Disputing them is not the only way. If the debt is legitimate and being reported correctly, you may want to try to negotiate a pay for delete. When using this method, remember to always get the terms in writing.

Your best bet is to choose a credit repair service that has a reputation for success, and that uses ethical and legal methods to improve your credit score. You may not be able to get rid of all negative information, but the removal of even a few items could see your credit score improve dramatically.

Paying Off Old Debts Will Improve My Credit Score

Surprisingly, paying off old debts will not always improve your credit score, and may actually worsen it. This is because paying on an old debt can sometimes make the debt appear to be new. If the amount you owe is substantial, this can make it seem as though you’ve just taken on a lot of new debt. While the credit bureaus are working on finding ways to eliminate this setback, currently there is still a chance you could see your credit score fall as a result of old debts being paid. Be particularly vigilant when it comes to knowing when your debt’s statute of limitations for collections has run out – you don’t want to pay on a debt that is no longer enforceable by law unless there are very special circumstances.

Keeping the truth behind these three myths in mind can help you to avoid unnecessary declines in your credit score. If you need help improving your credit score, always deal with a reputable agency, and be sure to check the facts to be certain the law is on your side in your quest for better credit.

Looking at credit repair websites online, it’s easy to get the impression that credit repair is simple, painless, and quick. Just hand over your credit report (or in some instances, the company even pulls your credit report for you) choose which items to dispute, and sit back while the credit repair company mails a letter or two and gets the negative information off of your credit report for good. Credit repair sites can make the process look so simple that some people may wonder why they need a credit repair company at all. It’s just mailing a form letter, right?

Though you may be tempted to try to repair your credit on your own, there are some definite pitfalls to this route. Aside from the fact that most people lack the expertise to really repair their own credit effectively, there are some common pitfalls that the ‘do-it-yourself’ types often fall into when it comes to credit repair. If you decide you want to try it on your own, keep these caveats in mind:

1. Don’t Dispute Everything at Once.

Consumer reporting companies are required to respond to and investigate any dispute that is not deemed “frivolous”. There are no hard and fast rules for what constitutes a frivolous dispute, but having all of your negative credit entries in dispute at once will almost certainly cause some companies to ignore your request. This means that negative items may be even more difficult to remove – as multiple disputes over the same item can also be considered frivolous.

2. Provide Proof When You Have It.

If you have receipts that show you paid on the first of the month, but the creditors are showing the payment on the 19th, you should use this to your advantage. Make copies of the receipts and enclose them with your dispute. Is your name correct on those derogatory items? How about your address? Any legitimate reason to dispute a negative item should come along with some proof as to why the dispute is being made.

3. Keep Your Tone Professional.

Consumer reporting companies respond best to communications that are courteous, professional, and direct. Don’t’ write long-winded letters of dispute, and don’t try to obscure the facts. Make your request, present your evidence, and summarize your position on the issue. Poorly worded disputes may also be seen as frivolous, so pay careful attention to both spelling and grammar. Additionally, you may wish to use a template – but be aware that if all of your disputes read like form letters, you may not see much progress. Still, for those who want to handle the dispute from start to finish, there are form letters available online that serve as a good base to start with.

Credit repair isn’t as simple as it seems to be in the surface. The expert credit repair representatives that do a good job and operate above board provide a valuable service to those individuals who either cannot, or will not attempt to handle credit disputes themselves. This is why it is especially important to find a reputable agency to repair your credit – expertise always gets results. However, if you are one of the do-it-yourself types, following the above guidelines will help ensure that your credit repair attempts aren’t derailed from the start.

Your credit reports contain information about where you live, how you pay your bills, and any public records that you may have. Credit bureaus sell your report to creditors, insurers, employers, landlords and anyone else who will pay for it. They use this information to evaluate what kind of risk you will be for credit, insurance, employment, renting and sometimes utilities.

Most of you probably already knew that…but, did you know a study released by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group in June 2004 found that 79% of the consumer credit reports surveyed contained some kind of error or mistake. That’s right, that means about 4 out of 5 people have information on their credit reports that is erroneous! Astonishing isn’t it?

Even worse, more than 25% of credit reports have errors serious enough to result in the denial of credit or increase rates. A good score can save you $100,000 over the life of a $250,000 mortgage. So, technically, you could be paying $100,000 more on a 30 year mortgage because of MISTAKES THE CREDIT BUREAUS MADE in reporting your information!

That’s really just the beginning of the awful things that could happen to a consumer because of credit bureau’s erroneous reporting. For this reason and many others, it’s crucial that you review your credit report periodically.

To dispute these errors you must first get your credit reports. Then, you must spend some time analyzing your credit reports. Make sure that all of the information being reported is accurate. The credit bureaus must investigate the items in question within 30 days. They also must forward all relevant information you provide about the inaccuracy to the creditor that provided the information.

After the creditor receives notice of a dispute from the consumer reporting company, it must investigate, review the relevant information, and report the results back to the consumer reporting company. If the information provider finds the disputed information is inaccurate, it must notify all three nationwide consumer reporting companies so they can correct the information in your file.

There are many more techniques to get inaccurate information removed from your credit reports. Stop by the credit repair forum or check out the Credit Secrets Bible to find out how you can get started repairing your credit today!

If you prefer to let professionals handle the job, give Lexington Law Firm a shot!
